technology to crack down on new year's weekend. happening now, police square off with occupiers, after a new encampment springs up on vacant land in the east bay. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. >> good evening, it's wednesday, december 28. this is bay area news at 7:00. they call it operation silent night. police in red wood city say they're turning to shop spotter technology by cracking down anyone who celebrates the new year by shooting a gun into the air. how do spot shotters work. >> reporter: there are a few things in the air in new york city on new year's eve, the bullets from the reveller's guns, and above the power lines

is an extra set of electronic ears to help police keep it a silent night. this lights up like a christmas tree on new year's eve. >> traditionally, some folks like to celebrate by firing guns into the air. >> reporter: red wood city natives like eric silverman have learned to count on the tradition and take cover. >> things do fall out of the sky around here. it's not the. >> reporter: bullets? >> i don't think so. i don't think they're firecrackers. >> reporter: in red wood city, big brother might not always be watching, but he is listening, perched on power lines and buildings, a system of microphones connected to a computer at police dispatch. shot spotter technology records and differentiates gun shots from firecrackers, and pin points the intersection, even the address. red wood city is the first department to use shot spotter. it's helping police in their silent night program, helping to

curb new year's eve revellers. >> officers are getting undercover around midnight, because what goes up has to come down. >> reporter: last year, police responded to 22 calls for gun shots on nairs. this year, eric silverman is playing it safe. >> reporter: certainly getting arrested is no way to start 2012. reckless discharge of a firearm comes with a fun and up to three years in prison. more details on the law enforcement plans for new year's eve. oakland police plan to beef up their police patrols as well and keep an eye on people who will discharge a gun. they hope to spread the word about celebrating the new year safely. alameda county officers

teamed up today and arrested hundreds of people with arrest warrants related to their drunk driving conditions. 52 people failed to complete the terms of their sentence, like fines and paperwork, and others did not attend the required classes or perform community service. >> it's a reminder. there's consequences for getting arrested for dwi, and if you don't take care of what you need to, the officers will come pick you up. everything we do is a reminder to not get people to drink and drive. >> officers started the dui warrant sweep before the sun came up. we followed a team as they knocked on doors and surprised people. even one lady was arrested at the super market where she worked. now, to developing news we've been following for you, and new details of a woman being sought by freemont police after she allegedly ran down a man on an oakland sidewalk. it happened on 98 and e. freemont police say they were looking for a woman wanted on a felony stolen vehicle warrant and illegal drug sale. according to the police, the woman spotted them and drove up

on the sidewalk and crashed into a man outside a store before driving away. there's no word just yet on how badly that victim was hurt. police just released this photo of the suspect within the past 30 minutes here. she is 27-year-old erica roja, a former freemont resident. officers say she was driving a 2011 white mitsubishi endeavor, that may now have a broken mirror. we'll have more for you tonight on the 10:00 on ktvu. mills college was the focus of a man hunt who officers say led police on a high speed chase. this view from chopper 2 shows officers with guns drawn searching the campus. police tell us that the threat of releasing a dog convinced the suspect to surrender. they haven't released his name but say he cut his hand while jumping a fence. officers say he was driving a stolen vehicle and struck at least two other vehicles while trying to evade officers. >> he was going about, i don't know, over 100 coming off of the

freeway. i'm driving in this lane, and he drives into me, pushing me up on the curb right here. >> she wasn't injured but her mustang is in bad shape. the el camino he's accused of stealing is also banged up. topping our economy watch tonight, a new survey of human resource managers offers reasons to be hopeful about the employment outlook in 2012. 20% of employers plan to hire new full time workers this year, about the same as last year. however, the amount planning to lay off workers to 7%. the dow industrial fell 139 points and nasdaq lost 35. analysts blame jitters over italian debt and a trading deadline is for the decline. the dow jones has a 5% gain for the year. the s & p 500 is basically flat,

just a couple points lower than where it stood when the year began. ahead just in eight minutes, the buzz about business at bars and restaurants for new year's eve. we'll sample the offerings for us. at this hour, police are breaking up the latest occupy encampment that sprang up yesterday, happening on a triangle of land. around 5:00 this evening, police moved in to clear the area. there were only about 15 tents at that point. while several people were handcuffed, it seems only one person was arrested. >> come on, we pay them for this? we're feeding homeless people giving them a warm place to stay. >> they say they chose that site because they thought no one owned it. a man says he is the owner and bought the property from the city about five years ago. for updates tonight, go to ktvu.com. we'll be posting new video as the situation develops, and we'll have a full report on the 10:00 news on ktvu.

occupy demonstrators are planning to get their message out in pasadena next week during the tournament of roses parade. >> stay tuned. it's going to be pretty incredible. the people's procession. we the people march, the people's parade is a counter point to the corporate parade that much of the rose parade has come to embody. >> organizers say they plan to display anticorporate signs and hoist a 40-food wide inflatable oct pus to represent what they say is a corporate stranglehold on us politics. pasadena police say they will make sure it doesn't interrupt the parade. cyber security experts are issuing a warning about the vulnerability of mobile devices. they say wireless devices typically don't have security protection. >> reporter: the ticker board at the santa clarra based security software firm mcafee lists the malicious software being discovered every day, a list that grows and grows.

today, mcafee released a report saying they'll step up hacking on smart phone apps, including banking in 2012. some want to stop banking that way. >> if there's a chance of someone getting into the account, that's the fear. >> reporter: mcafee says the people use the mobile device like it was a pc but without taking security precaution. >> turn off your blue tooth if not using your head set. we also suggest you apply the latest system and application patches. >> the situation could get worse. the mcafee report also points out many new cars come with a dock to connect the mobile device to an on board computer control system, which means a cyber criminal could take control of the vehicle even when it's moving. >> we could do several things with automobiles. we can unlock and start them, and we can deploy the air bags and apply the brakes with a smart phone. >> reporter: high tech analyst rob anderly says hackers are still ahead. >> mcafee is trying to get us to think about it before we get into a panic mode. >> reporter: many mobile users

tell us they have to risk it. >> i can't help it. i tend to depend on a lot of apps. >> reporter: mcafee suggested new year's resolution, antimalware software for all devices when available because they can all be hacked. robert honda, ktvu news. the mayor is visiting hong kong with his wife. last year, he got the call inter at this time. since then he's been elected to a full term. while he's away, cohen is acting mayor of the city and will remain on the job until he returns to city hall on january 3. one of mayor lee's first task in the new year is choosing a replacement supervisor for sheriff kirimi. there's one year left in his term. the appointee will likely influence the balance of power between moderates and liberals on the board. a massive clean up effort has begun at people's park. we caught up with workers this

morning as they were trimming hedges and trees, to help reduce the rat population that can hide out in the heavy ground cover of plants. going forward, crews plan to seed smaller plants. over the next months, plans call for new lighting and trash cans. members of the park say its members were not informed and the area bull dozed today is where they hold their council meeting. in three days, hundreds of people will fill this venue just like other parties around the area. what that says about the economy. also ahead, a labor dispute at a licorice maker. why workers are walking a picket line. a little bit of activity showing up. coming up, a temperature change, you will notice first thing tomorrow morning, and shower chances could be added to our local forecast.

>> the pipe ruptured this morning benear golden state park. crews spent hours working to repair the pipe and tell us they had it cleaned up and water restored about 1:45 this afternoon. there was another water main break this morning, this time in san leandro. it was reported after 4:00 on 45 and leonard street on interstate 880. the break occurred in a 12-inch line, says breaks are not uncommon and can be triggered by the cold water. water was shut off for most of the day but drinking water was not affected. tonight, how different price tags are helping san francisco businesses close out the year for new year's. >> reporter: like many san francisco hotels, the hotel

vitali has a party planned for new year's eve, but it's not cheap. tickets are in the $170 range for open bar and hors d'oeuvres, and that's not all. >> we are on the embarkadero next to the bridge, and the fireworks at midnight are fantastic. >> reporter: plenty of revellers will choose cheaper options, such as leathio duals in union square. >> there's no cover, open, and reasonably price. we do a huge business. >> reporter: on the street, we found some people opposed to the big expensive parties, and others who have decided to stay close to home. >> i just think it's a little outrageous when you have to pay $100 or more per ticket, and then it's a let-down usually. >> that $200 you spend usually because you go out as a couple when you share new year's, you might as well use it for a nice bottle of champagne, and a nice dinner with friends. >> reporter: the supervisor's president david chu told me all the revelry is good news for the city. >> what i've heard from businesses is there's cautious

optimism. a lot of folks are hoping 2012 will be a better year. there have been some signs of that. >> reporter: in fact, president of san francisco travel, jojo sanrow says all the indicators are positive. >> 2011 has been a great year for san francisco. our growth rate has been upsubstantially over last year of the we're all confident that the end of the year will continue to see that same pattern. >> reporter: another option is thirsty bear on howard street which has a fixed menu, drink specials and a champagne toast at midnight. in san francisco, ktvu news. google social network is growing. a statistician tracking the site says google plus is tracking about 225,000 members a day, currently has 62 million users and could have 400 million users by this time next year. the mountain view company made google plus available to the general public in september. facebook claims more than 800 million users. candy makers at a union city factory are spending the holiday season on a picket line. employees started their strike

four weeks ago. at issue was a company demand that workers pay more of their health care benefit. >> the company is not really coming to the table and, you know, it seems we can come back in to negotiations, and get this matter resolved. >> company management had no public comment today. the union city plant is the only place in america where redvine licorice is made. a judge today ordered the owner and manager of a san francisco printing company to stand trial in the death of an employee killed on the job. at a news conference today, prosecutors showed photos to explain how 26-year-old margarita mohica was crushed by a printing press three years ago. digital prepress international owner and the manager have pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and workplace safety violations. >> we're trying to send a message here, both to the employers and the employees, you know, the employers have an obligation to provide a safe

fix it. >> reporter: going negative makes it tough for candidates to stay positive. >> there aren't many politicians spending more time paying off donors than rick perry has. >> reporter: many say they're still undecided and growing weary of the campaigns that feature negative attacks alongside the political promises. in washington, i'm emily schmit. in an associated press survey of 36 leading economists, 24 said romney is the republican candidate who would do the best job managing the economy. one named gingrich, and the rest didn't name any. only five said president obama is doing a good job managing the economy. 18 said he's doing a fair job, while 13 rated his work as poor. the pilot of a southwest airlines passenger jet decided to make an emergency landing today after a plane struck a bird. the pilot had taken off for ontario from southern california. it hit the bird and returned to san francisco international

airport. the airline rebooked passengers on other flights. that bird strike was a second incident involving a southwest jet in sacramento in a 12-hour span. another had two tires blow out while taxiing down the run way. no one was hurt in either incident. they are hoping a red light camera will make a busy intersection safer. it says the intersection of fail street and masonic avenue is a hot spot for collision. rush hour drivers turning left often tangle with cyclists and pedestrians in the crosswalk. >> people want to get through the light before it changes, so they'll come right here, and then the bikers are supposed to cross too. so i saw someone get hit that way. >> we've learned the cameras will be turned on in early january, with signs posted, warning of fines up to $350 for illegal left turns. up next, peter mcgowan signs

>> the former head of the san francisco giants owner group says he doesn't think the oakland a's will find their way to san jose. they have been told repeatedly that the giants have the territorial rights. he says he hasn't met with giants' management to negotiate a deal. a's owner says relocation is not on the agenda when team owners meet next month. in weather, the clouds have been heading back into the bay area, even a few light showers, really not here in the main rain bend up to the north, even a few sprinkles heading north, a possibility throughout the evening hours. today, this was the scene toward the golden gate bridge. you can see an increase in the high clouds and especially that low cloud deck, dense fog coast side and right around the bay, and you can count on some of that overcast first thing tomorrow morning. overnight lows will not be as cold as this morning. coolest location, low 20s and

30s, coolest locations back into the 40s. san francisco around 50, and san jose starting thursday morning in the upper 40s. here's the bigger picture on the satellite, this weakening system moving into southern california but strong enough to generate a few high clouds in the bay area. high pressure will continue to weaken and as a result will continue to have a few high clouds spilling into northern california for tomorrow. as we do take this into friday, there's another frontal system that will be marching closer to our coast line, so as a result, we do bring in the chance of a few light showers, and it's mainly up in the north bay. as we move to the south, we really begin to scale back on the probability, and maybe just a chance of a few sprinkles in the south bay, so we could have a few showers at least developing north of the golden gate bridge as you can see into friday, but not for tomorrow. lots of cloud cover out there for you thursday. the rain band remains focused north of the area. friday, this system just weakens and falls apart over the region, but strong enough we do bring in the chance of a few sprinkles or

few light showers. but by late friday, this system moves out of town. for tomorrow, mostly cloudy skies, patchy fog at 7:00, temperatures in most areas starting out the day in the 40s. by 12:00, partly to mostly cloudy, and by 3:00, still a sun/cloud mix. might be that filtered sunshine deal, and temperatures mainly in the upper 50s to lower 60s. tomorrow, these were the afternoon highs, a little bit cooler than today. the warmest today was in the upper 60s. we'll trim back on those balmy readings a little bit. san mateo around 60. the extended forecast with the weekend always in view, there's a little rain cloud reflected, chance of a light shower or sprinkle, dry as we head into the weekend with a mix of sun and cloud mix and temperatures in the 60s, gassia. >> thank you, mark. someone hit the megamillion lottery last night for a jackpot worth $206. the winning ticket was sold in long island, new york, grocery store on monday. it was a quick pick.
